Barbershop Names: 130 Ideas (and How to Check Them)
Barbershop names: 130 original ideas (classic, modern, funny, upscale, neighborhood) plus the USPTO, state and DBA checks so your shop name is safe to use.
· 7 min read · BeautiDock
The best barbershop names are short, easy to say over the buzz of clippers, simple to spell, and tell people what you do and how you do it: classic hot-towel shaves, sharp modern fades, or a neighborhood shop with a TV and a debate going. A name also has to be available: not a registered trademark for barber services, not used by a shop nearby, and free on Instagram. Here is a 6-step method, the USPTO and state checks, and 130 original barbershop name ideas grouped by style.
Key takeaways
- Good barbershop names pass three tests: the shout test (understood across a loud shop), the spell test (typed right after hearing it once) and the sign test (readable from the street).
- Check four places before committing: USPTO Trademark Search, your state business entity search, state or county DBA records, and Instagram + domain.
- Barber shop services are listed in trademark class 44. A federal trademark application costs $350 per class as of October 2026.
- Registering an LLC name or buying a domain doesn't give you trademark rights, per the USPTO.
- The ideas below are original suggestions, but any name can already be in use somewhere: verify before you print.
How to choose a barbershop name in 6 steps
1. Define the shop in one sentence
"Walk-in friendly neighborhood shop, fades and lineups, open late." "Appointment-only gentlemen's barber with hot-towel shaves and whiskey." "Kids and family cuts in a strip mall." The name should tell the same story. "The Lather Society" and "Block Party Barbers" attract different clients.
2. Brainstorm 30 names fast
Pull from barber vocabulary (fade, taper, lineup, lather, razor, strop, chair, guard), materials (steel, brass, oak, leather), your block or street, your nickname, and a few puns. Don't filter yet.
3. Test clarity and sound
- Clarity: can a stranger guess it's a barbershop in 5 seconds? If not, add Barbers, Barber Co. or Barbershop.
- Say it out loud: "Where'd you get that cut?" "___." If you have to repeat it twice over the clippers, it fails.
- Spelling: read it once to a friend and have them type it. "Kutz" and "Fadez" make you harder to find on Google and Instagram.
4. Check handles and domain
Search Instagram and TikTok for the exact handle and test the .com. If they're taken, add your city or "barbers" (brasschairbarbers, brasschair.dallas) rather than random numbers or underscores.
5. Do the legal checks
See the next section. Five minutes now beats repainting a window later.
6. Let your future clients vote
Show three finalists to 10 people who match your clientele. Pick the name they understand and remember, not the one your crew laughed at the loudest.
How to check if a barbershop name is available
1. USPTO Trademark Search. The USPTO's free Trademark Search system (tmsearch.uspto.gov) replaced the old TESS tool on November 30, 2023. Search the exact name, sound-alikes and alternate spellings. Per the USPTO, two marks can conflict when they sound alike, look alike or give the same overall impression, and the services are related. In the international (Nice) classification used by the USPTO, class 44 lists barber shop services and hairdressing, so look closely at class 44 and at grooming products (class 3), since many barbers launch a pomade or beard oil later.
2. State trademarks and the web. The USPTO's examining attorney only searches the federal database, and the USPTO says searching state trademark databases and the internet is your job. Google the name with "barber" and check Google Maps around you.
3. State business entity search. Forming an LLC or corporation? Search your Secretary of State's database. The SBA notes most states won't let you register a name another business already registered.
4. DBA. If you operate under a name that isn't your legal name or your entity name, the SBA says most states require a DBA registration; depending on location it's filed with the state, county or city. A DBA alone doesn't protect the name.
5. Trademark or not? It's optional: the USPTO says you become a trademark owner when you start using the mark. Federal registration adds nationwide protection, at a base fee of $350 per class (USPTO fee schedule, in effect since January 2025). Names that only describe the service ("Best Barbershop") can be refused as merely descriptive. This is general information, not legal advice.
Mistakes to avoid when naming a barbershop
- The overused pun. If the first five Google results for your pun are other shops, clients will mix you up. Check before falling in love.
- Dark jokes. Razor-slip and horror-movie barber references are funny until a nervous first-timer reads them.
- Borrowing a brand. Names that echo a famous pomade, sports team or national chain invite a cease-and-desist.
- Creative spelling. Every K instead of C is a search you lose.
- Boxing yourself in. "Fade Kings" is awkward if you hire a barber who specializes in shaves, and "Men's Cuts Only" is a problem if you start cutting everyone.
- Ignoring the handle. A great name with the_real_fadehouse_2 as an Instagram handle loses walk-ins who try to look you up.

Test your shortlist (checklist)
Run your top three barbershop names through this list:
- Understood the first time when you say it over running clippers.
- Spelled correctly after one hearing.
- A stranger guesses "barbershop" in 5 seconds, or your sign and tagline make it obvious.
- Looks sharp on a window decal, a cape, a business card and a tiny Instagram profile picture.
- No identical or sound-alike mark in USPTO Trademark Search for class 44 or grooming products.
- No match in your Secretary of State search or state trademark records.
- No barbershop with the same or a confusingly similar name on Google Maps nearby.
- Instagram handle and .com free (or clean variants with your city).
- Works if you add chairs, a second location or a product line.
- DBA or LLC filing planned, and you've decided whether to file a federal trademark.
Got the name? Put it on a booking page
Use the exact same name on your window, Google Business Profile, Instagram and online booking. BeautiDock gives your shop a booking website in your name and colors, a shared calendar with logins for each barber, and email reminders the day before, with optional deposits on the services that get the most no-shows. Walk-ins you add yourself are always free. The Pro look option ($9/month) connects your own domain. You can set up your shop for free.

Frequently asked questions
What makes a good barbershop name?
A good barbershop name is short, easy to say over loud clippers, easy to spell, and tells people it's a barbershop or hints at it. It should fit your style (classic, modern, upscale or neighborhood) and be free as a trademark, a local business name and an Instagram handle.
Should I use my own name for my barbershop?
Your name works well if clients follow you personally, for example 'Dre's Chair' or 'Cuts by Luis'. It's harder to sell or grow into a multi-chair brand, and the USPTO can refuse to register a mark whose main meaning is a surname, so pairing your name with a distinctive word is often stronger.
How do I check if a barbershop name is already taken?
Search the name and sound-alikes in the USPTO's Trademark Search system, your Secretary of State's business search and your state or county DBA records. Then check Google Maps, Instagram and the .com. For a name you'll invest in, ask a trademark attorney for a clearance search.
Are funny barbershop names a good idea?
They can be, if the joke is understood in seconds, stays positive and still sounds fine on a receipt. The most famous puns are used by many shops already, so check availability carefully and avoid jokes about blood, razors slipping or bad haircuts.
