StyleSeat is a marketplace app that finds you new clients in exchange for a 30% New Client Connection fee (capped at $50) and a $2.35 booking fee your clients pay; BeautiDock is your own booking website with deposits and a loyalty card, no commission, no client fee, and a cost capped at $19 a month. If StyleSeat still brings you clients who come back, it can be worth it; if most of your book is regulars, BeautiDock usually costs less.
StyleSeat figures come from its pricing page and its own cost guide (updated August 2026), read in October 2026. The two show different subscription prices ($19 vs $35), so we show both.
Where StyleSeat is stronger
- Discovery. StyleSeat says 2M+ clients search its marketplace, and it invests in ads and placement to send them to your profile. BeautiDock has no marketplace.
- Fees only on what it brings. The New Client Connection fee is charged once per new marketplace client, never on their later visits, and StyleSeat says growth fees apply only to revenue its features generate.
- Text reminders and follow-ups. Automated texts (for example, "it's been 3 weeks since your silk press") are included. BeautiDock is email only.
- Payments at the chair. A card reader and Tap to Pay (2.5% + 30¢), plus card-on-file checkout (2.6% + 30¢). BeautiDock has no POS.
- Team members at no extra seat cost, a marketing suite, smart waitlists and a free trial with no contracts.
Where BeautiDock is stronger
- No commission, no client fee. Every client, new or returning, books for free and you pay nothing extra on them. On StyleSeat, a $150 color for a new marketplace client costs you $45 and the client pays $2.35.
- Predictable cost. First 30 online bookings free, then $0.50 each, never more than $19 per professional per month ($190 a year). Bookings you add yourself are free.
- Your own site. Three designer templates, your colors, your photos, a page per service and a team page, with your own domain on the optional Pro look ($9/month). Clients see only you, not nearby competitors.
- Deposits that refund themselves. Set a deposit per service and a cancellation window; refunds before it are automatic. Money goes straight to your Stripe account.
- Retention emails: rebooking reminders and Google review requests, plus a loyalty card.
What it costs: a worked example
Assumptions (labelled): one hairstylist, 80 online bookings a month, average service $70, 4 of them new clients from the StyleSeat marketplace. Card processing excluded.
| StyleSeat ($19 price) | StyleSeat ($35 price) | BeautiDock | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subscription | $19 | $35 | 80 × $0.50 = $40, capped at $19 |
| New Client Connection | 4 × 30% × $70 = $84 | $84 | $0 |
| You pay | $103 | $119 | $19 ($15.83 on the annual plan) |
| Your clients pay | $2.35 per booking | $2.35 per booking | $0 |
The fair caveat: BeautiDock won't replace those 4 new clients. If they would only find you through StyleSeat and each rebooks for a year, $21 per client is a reasonable cost. Many stylists keep a marketplace profile for discovery and send regulars to their own link. Also note that BeautiDock deposits cost Stripe's fee + 0.9% (about 3.8% + 30¢ on a US card), slightly more per payment than StyleSeat's card-on-file rate.
Switching from StyleSeat
- Save your client list (names, phone numbers, emails, notes) before you change anything, and put it in a CSV file.
- Set up BeautiDock: services, prices, durations, hours, deposits and cancellation window. Import the CSV.
- Test the booking flow on your phone.
- Tell clients at their next visit and by message: "I've moved my booking to [link]. Same prices, no booking fee."
- Update your links in your Instagram bio, Google Business Profile and business cards; keep StyleSeat running for 4 to 6 weeks while bookings move over.
